UW Tacoma to offer classes at Satsop Park

SATSOP — Harborites looking for continuing education opportunities can now obtain certification in project management and contract management through new programs at the Regional Education and Training Center at the Satsop Development Park.

The University of Washington-Tacoma’s Key Bank Center is offering the courses starting in early August and September.

The Key Bank Center and Regional Education and Training Center held a public forum May 5 at the development park, seeking input on what sorts of programs the public and local business interests wanted to see. The courses in contract and project management were the most popular among locals looking for continuing education, said Ryan Davis, the executive director of the training center.

“That was what the demand was perceived to be,” Davis said. “If (the programs are) successful, we can add more.”

The Key Bank Center in Tacoma was created about seven years ago and offers advanced, non-degree education. Some of its current course offerings include project and contract management, geographic information systems credentials, database management and environmental law and regulation.

The center wanted to expand into the Grays Harbor region and the training center at Satsop was attractive to the school because of the available classrooms, Davis said last May.

Both programs will be taught by the Key Bank Center’s professors.

The project management certificate program will begin in August and will be held all-day each Tuesday. Students can obtain their certificate in five weeks, Davis said.

The contract management program is set to begin in September and will be offered as evening classes for the academic year.
